Ali:
Hi, my name is Ali, but my mom calls me her "Lil Miracle." When I was 14 weeks old, I was diagnosed with a Portal-Systemic Shunt. I had a defect in the circulation around my liver that allowed my blood to bypass my liver without being detoxified. When I was first diagnosed, I was showing neurological symptoms (head pressing, disorientation, drooling, etc.). It was pretty serious and my mom was really upset. I had to undergo surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary Hospital to have an ameroid constrictor put in place. It took months of check ups and tests, medications, a special diet and unfortunately, a few setbacks before I made a full recovery. My growth has been permanently stunted, but all neurological abnormalities have been reversed. Mom says I'm a Mini-Pug, but she loves me anyway. I have been through a lot during the first year of my life, but I have overcome significant odds and am now living a very happy, healthy and love-filled life. The picture I have included was taken about a month after my surgery (you can still see where they shaved my belly). It's not my best, but I really hope you'll consider it for your monthly contest.
